INTACH chapter in Koraput soon
Correspondent
BHUBANESWAR: After establishing its chapters in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Baripada, INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage) has resolved to set up its Koraput chapter soon. This was announced during the foundation day celebration of INTACH here on Sunday.
Addressing the celebration hosted by the Orissa Chapter, noted artist Jatin Das expressed his concern over the dangerous impact of globalisation on the local culture and tradition. “People are destroying everything that is ethnic and switching over to a mono-culture,” he lamented and felt that there is an urgent need to make them aware of conserving the local culture. The Orissa chapter was involved in conservation of the Raghurajpur artists village near Puri and the Netaji Museum in Cuttack, informed its advisor and former Director General of Police A.B.Tripathy. It has also been lobbying for the coveted world heritage status for Bhubaneswar, he added. A delegation from INTACH met Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik a few months ago and urged upon him to move the UNESCO to accord such status on the ancient city of Bhubaneswar, it was learnt.
Orissa chapter chairperson Abasar Beuria chaired over the event that was attended by eminent theatre personality and INTACH advisor Anant Mohapatra and former justice of the Supreme Court G.B.Patnaik.

Sarpanches allege raw deal
Correspondent
KORAPUT: Goals of NREGA cannot be achieved if the district administration did not work as per action plans in villages, Bhagvan Muduli, Sarpanch of Podagad panchayat in Dasmantpur block of Koraput district said here on Friday. He was here to attend the first-ever seminar of sarpanches in the district organised under the aegis of Orissa Adivasi Manch (OAM).
He said the administration was not working towards the real needs of the people but was rather working to satisfy its own convenience and aspiration. Hari Angel, sarpanch of Balda panchayat in Nandapur block, said while the constitution had granted them as many as 29 powers, for the lack of access to information and administrative negligence most of the sarpanches had no knowledge of more than two powers, he added.
Madan Kirsani , Convenor of Orissa Adivasi Manch (OAM) and Damadar Jani , President of the forum addressed the gathering . Elections were held for the first executive body of the association of sarpanches.

Naxalites stab trader to death
Correspondent
KORAPUT: Bijay Kumar Degul, a local trader in his twenties, was stabbed to death by a group of armed naxalites in front of his father Dinabandhu at Sanpalmanda village in Kabiribedi panchayat of Bandhugaon block in Koraput district on Wednesday night.
According to sources, a group of six naxalites, including two women, entered the village and asked Bijay and his father to come out of their house. After taking them to the outskirts of the village, the naxalites tied both of them to two adjacent trees before stabbing Bijay alleging him to be a police informer.
In a letter left in the place, the Koraput area committee of CPI (Maoist) justified the killing of Bijay by saying that the trader was an oppressor of the tribal masses and on the basis of his information, the police was able to conduct a raid on the naxal camp of Dintiguda on the boarders of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh in November last.
Move opposed
The committee also warned the State government and more specifically the CRPF and other groups of police in the State of serious attacks in future for their alleged involvement and support in the rapid industrialisation and mining activities in the State.
Opposing the latest move by the State government to have links with foreign companies, the letter alleged that Naveen Pattnaik was selling the mineral wealth of the State to the developed countries like German, Japan and USA at the cost of the welfare of the common people .
While there were no serious activities by naxalites reported in the district for quite a long time, the killing of a local youth in the village created panic among people. However, special operation groups of police and CRPF personnel began combing operation in the area immediately after the killing.

5 naxals from TN handed over to Koraput police
Correspondent
The five were wanted in connection with the attack on armoury in Koraput
KORAPUT: Five hardcore naxalites were handed over to the Koraput police by the Tamil Nadu police to further strengthen the case of investigation in connection with the attack on the Koraput police armoury by naxalites in 2004. The naxalites -- Velu Murugan, Pala Nivel, Gobi Kannan, Muttu Selvam and Sunder Murty -- were produced before the SDJM court at Koraput on Tuesday and later forwarded to the Koraput district jail, Deepak Kumar, SP of Koraput said.
The process of transferring these naxalites began in August 2006 when the Tamil Nadu police recovered 10 guns from these naxalites while conducting a raid on their camp in the State. While the source of eight of them were not known, two guns had carried the mark of Koraput armoury and hence suspecting them to be the ones that had been stolen by naxalites from the district armoury and other police stations in the district in 2006, Koraput district police were informed. The five naxalites would be interrogated, he said.
However, security in the district jail at Koraput was tightened by deploying an additional platoon of police force in and around the jail premises. Patrolling in the town and other areas was also intensified to prevent any untoward incident.
