Maoists gun down BJD leader

Staff Reporter

Past association with naxals proves costly for the victim, says SP

BERHAMPUR: A lawyer, Prabir Kumar Mohanty, who was also secretary of the district unit of the BJD, was shot dead by Maoists in Malkangiri district of south Orissa in the wee hours of Tuesday.
The body was found near MPV-127 village in the morning. Four armed Maoists were involved in the killing of Mohanty who was a resident of MV-79 village, said Malkangiri Superintendent of Police, Satish Gajbhiye.
The Maoists killed him after calling him out for a ‘discussion’ in the nearby forest. He was shot from close range. The extremists left the body near MPV-127 village, four km from MV-79.
In letter left near the body, the Maoists said they killed him because he was a supporter of the Sangh Parivar and ‘exploiter’ of women and tribals.
According to the Superintendent of Police, the slain lawyer was defence counsel for arrested Maoists in several cases. Although he was a member of the BJD, he was active in RSS. There were also allegations that he had relationship with a tribal girl although he was married. This apparently made it easy for the Maoists to brand him an exploiter.

Border sealed

According to Mr. Gajbhiye, Mr. Mohanty was playing with fire due to his relationship with the Maoists as counsel. The Maoists seem to have thrown a challenge at the ruling alliance in the State through the murder of the BJD district secretary.
Two party observers of the BJD -- Balakrushna Ratha and Ramesh Majhi -- were at Malkangiri town since Monday to monitor the planning for the coming panchayat polls.
Following the killing, the inter-state border with Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in Malkangiri has been sealed and combing has been intensified to nab the naxals involved in the killing.

His cup of woes overflow

Correspondent

Purusottam Bisoyi

KORAPUT: It took 14 years to get a certificate from the district administration declaring Purusottam Bisoyi, an old man from Totapada village in Boipariguda block of Koraput district as blind. Family members including his wife and children deserted him after he had lost his sight for the alleged witchcraft practiced in his village, Purosottam said. Both of his eyes were damaged.
Having no one to support, he had to depend on the mercy of the villagers. All his trials to get the handicapped certificate from the authorities went in vain just like the request to grant him other benefits like handicap pension and a free travel pass in the buses had fallen onthe deaf ears, he added.
However, after much effort he was given the handicap certificate last year. While he was waiting for the pension for his blindness, he had applied for a free pass from the authorities to travel in buses. As he is finding it difficult to get a full meal in the village, the free pass could help him to move places in search of food, he said.
He was at Koraput district headquarters to present his case before the district Collector as all his hope in the block office was lost in these 14 years of lonely struggle, he added.

KORAPUT: Jogarao Mandinga , a 28-year-old naxalite was arrested by the Orissa police near Laxmipur in Koraput district on Sunday night, Deepak Kumar, SP, Koraput said. Joga was in the wanted list in the police records and this arrest was a major success, he added.
While Joga was involved in a large number of cases, his involvement in the murder of Markand Choudhury by the naxalites in Langalabeda village in Narayanpatna block recently was the most important naxal activity where he was actively involved.
Joga who also belonged to the same village Langalabeda, had played the lead role in drawing the plan for the naxalites, he said.
He was also supplying different materials of daily needs while staying among the masses to the naxalites and was engaged in actions like pasting posters and planting landmines in the region for them for the last three years, he added.

Promote book-reading, says author

Correspondent

KORAPUT: What do teachers and parents do to keep children engaged now-a-days? They give them toys to play or switch on the idiot box or play some cartoon CDs. “Few make an attempt to help the child explore the fascinating world of books,” says Chakrapani Parichha.
Author of over one hundred detective novels and a renowned playwright (he has 50 radio plays to his credit), Mr. Parichha says libraries in schools play a positive role in giving shape to children’s dreams.
Now a school teacher in Boipariguda in the district, Mr. Parichha, recalling his childhood days in the lesser-known school in the same village, says that the small library in the institution has been instrumental in widening his horizon.
“The teachers made available a good number of titles on the life of great personalities, novels, storybooks and even literary magazines,” he says.
“I have read many books before penning the first detective storybook Gotiye Mrutyura Sandhanare,” he recalls, and there is no looking back since then.
The fact that publishers like Meghamala Publications and others from far-off places have encouraged him speaks volumes of the popularity his titles enjoyed among the booklovers. Another interesting facet, which is unheard of in the present times, is the promotion of good works among the masses by the postman. “The postman of Boipariguda used to ask for the first book. He is the first reader and even the promoter of good writings,” Mr. Parichha says.
“The revolution that has been brought about in the literary world in the region by Mr. Parichha is remarkable,” says Narayan Panda, eminent writer and literary observer from Koraput. Pakhi Payeen Gitotiye, the recently published collection of Mr. Parichha’s immortal poems, is the imprint of such a revolution, he adds.

Patient moves from pillar to post for aid

Correspondent

Mahima Goudo

KORAPUT: Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, which was established with a mission to support the poor for minimising their suffering from diseases, seems to have failed to reach the common man for its complexity and alleged lack of interest among the service providers to extend the facility to the people. At least this was true with Mahima Goudo, a poor woman from Ghodadwar village in Koraput block who has been moving from pillar to post for the last 13 years to get relieved from the serious infection in her chest. She was admitted to the district headquarters hospital a long time ago, according to hospital sources. But it has not been conformed whether she is suffering from TB or some other chest disease, the sources say. While she has been given some anti-TB drug in the beginning, she has not responded to the drug and discontinued it as it was more painful, says Mahima. Since then she has been taking some medicines by purchasing them from the open market. As things got wor!
se, she has been asked to leave her in-law’s house. She continued to suffer from the disease and without any support, not even from her husband, she is forced to stay with her parents for all these years.
There is no support from the health service providers to fight back her illness, she laments. At last she came to know about the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and approached the local MLA with all the details of her illness.
Taraprasad Bahinipati, MLA, Koraput, has sent his recommendation to the CDMO’s office. But here too she has failed to get the support.

School enrolment drive gets fillip

Correspondent

UNICEF’s integrated campaign in Koraput district makes headway

KORAPUT: “I had left my village school after studying up to Standard V for the fear of failing in most of the subjects, especially in mathematics,” says Baido Majhi, the eldest son of Padlam Majhi of Paiko Puki village in Dasmantpur block of Koraput district who discontinued his schooling a year ago. He found more pleasure in catching fish than going to school. But, he was not able to convince his friend Durjya Majhi to follow his footsteps. Durjya has continued his studies and this year he is going to join a nearby school enjoying a hostel life.
The joy of being in school is clearly visible among his friends like Durjya and this rekindled a lost desire to get into the school, go through the books and be a regular student rather than being called a drop-out. At this junction, an integrated campaign by UNICEF has been initiated in Koraput district to enroll drop-out children in schools, Biranchi Paikray, District Coordinator of ANKUR, the joint initiative of UNICEF and the district administration, says. The uniqueness of this year’s enrolment drive is the importance given to the participation of different stake holders in the field of development, he adds.

Joint effort

While women like Kamala Khora, ward member, and Chakradhar Majhi, Village Education Committee (VEC) member of Paiko Puki have come forward to join hands with youth volunteers in organising rallies in villages, child reporters like Puspanjali Khora and Gitanjali Dongri played their role as the agents of change, Nalin Takri, secretary of NIRMAN, the organisation whose volunteers have given their support, say.
Having been supported by the community , the UNICEF and the district administration, who have come together in the district to bring back even the girls like Bhagabati Majhi, Gori Majhi, Nabina Khosla apart from seven more boys to get attracted towards the school once again, he says.
Bhagavati is now confident of going ahead with her studies as her parents are more convinced this time and have sent her to school with a greater conviction than last year when she was asked to leave the school to take charge of the household work.
However, such experiences are not only limited to Paiko Puki alone. The villagers in the far-flung areas like Kotia in the inner circle of many mountain folds of the eastern ghat region in the district too have come forward to enable their children to be in school. Children have been enrolled from the inaccessible pockets of the region as parents from Arju Valasa, Jahnkar Valsa, Tadi valsa, Dhulipadar, Katragada, Kanadora and many other villages have come in large numbers to make the campaign one of the most memorable event, says Mr. Paikray.

Teachers plan hunger strike

Correspondent

KORAPUT: Members of the ‘All Orissa Elementary Trained Graduate Teachers Association have announced plan to go on hunger strike and self-immolation in the State capital on May 21 if the Government fails to meet their demands, according to Ajit Kumar Lima, general secretary of the Koraput district branch of the association.
In a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister, the association alleged that the State Government had failed to keep its promise even though the Chief Minister himself had promised on the occasion of Teachers’ Day last year to make necessary amendments to facilitate promotional benefits to eligible primary school teachers having B.Ed. qualification . While the promotional benefits had been given in other districts, it was not carried out only in Koraput, the association alleged . The members took out a rally before handing over a memorandum to the ADM in the Collector’s office.

Duruas take pride in their traditional costumes

Ch. Santakar

KORAPUT: The aesthetic sense of the ‘Durua’ finds expression in their dress, ornaments, costumes, art, craft, song, music, interior decoration and almost in everything they do. Describing the tribe with these words of integral appreciation, Paresh Rath, a tribal researcher from the region and the author of ‘The Durua’, the first ever book being published on Durua tribe, says the tribal women in particular treat their costumes and tradition as their pride possession.
While the Durua male have wavy hair with a ponytail get dressed with a turban on their head, bow on their shoulder, a knife and a set of arrows in hand during the special occasions, women too love to be dressed with a number of ornaments.
They wear saree covering the knee with a styled knot on the left shoulder. They dress their hair with castor oil, make a clear partition of the hair on the scalp and put a number of hair clips, hand-made wooden comb and forest flowers.
However, the special features of the tribe are exhibited during festive occasions, marriages or while participating in their traditional dances where the Durua women wear a particular type of saree with white body and brown boarders. These special features of the tribal community and the rich flora and fauna of the reserve forest have been attracting tourists even from overseas to Siribeda, one of the Durua villages in this part of the district, Mangala Chelana, a tribal youth from the community in Siribeda, says.

Bangalore, May 1 (2008): Mr Naresh Chandra Agarwal is HAL’s new Director Design and Development. He assumed office on May 1, 2008 following the superannuation of Mr M.S. Nadgir.

“With so many design projects, both in fixed and rotary wing, my focus will be on consolidation, to effectively manage and organise teams to move ahead in all projects. The consolidation mode will also ensure meeting time schedules,” Mr Agarwal said, soon after assuming office.

Mr Agarwal did his graduation in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1972 and joined HAL as a Design Trainee in the 3rd batch. He joined the R&D Centre of HAL, Lucknow, as Aeronautical Engineer in February 1974 and spent 27 years in the design and development of aerospace systems and equipment.
